Subject Choices

Junior cycle students study a combination of core and option subjects. Our core subjects are; Mathematics, English, Irish, Science, History, Geography, CSPE, SPHE, RE and PE. These subjects are studied by all students.

Students can also choose optional subjects. These subjects may vary from year to year depending on demand and availability of resources.

Students choose their optional subjects before starting first year in September.

Our range of option subjects may include; Graphics, Wood Technology, Engineering, Home Economics, Business, Music, Art, Coding, Financial Education, German, Spanish and French.

Modern Foreign Languages

Short Courses – Short courses offered include Coding. Coding focusses on developing students’ problem solving skills through Computer Science Introduction, Let’s Get Connected and Coding. Students will study Coding plus another short course

Art – Students will learn new skills and find their talents as an artist/craftsperson/designer. They will have opportunities to be creative and use their imagination through art, craft and design

Business – Business Studies focuses on improving students' understanding of the business environment and on developing skills for life, work and further study. Students will learn about Personal Finance, Enterprise and Our Economy

Home Economics – Students will develop knowledge, understanding, skills and values in Food, Health and Cooking; Responsible Family Living; and, Textiles and Craft

Wood Technology – Wood Technology focuses on developing students’ understanding of, and skills in, the applications and impact of using wood as a resource in the world around them

Engineering - Through the study of engineering, students will have the opportunity to behave as an engineer. Students will identify problems, look for ideas for how to solve the problems, and try to improve the design or devise a better one

Music - Through engaging with music, students are offered opportunities to develop new skills, while drawing on their previous experiences

Graphics - Students will develop their creativity as they investigate and solve design challenges. Technical drawings are essential in design and manufacturing
