The Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) is a two-year programme offered at St. Mark’s Community School as an alternative to the traditional Leaving Certificate. It is designed for students who prefer a more practical, hands on approach to learning and who want to develop real-life skills that will help them in adult and working life.
The word ‘Applied’ reflects the programme’s focus on learning through practical experiences. Over the two years, students complete educational tasks both in school and in real world settings, such as workplaces and the wider community. The LCA values each student’s individual talents and places strong emphasis on active, student-centered learning. It encourages personal growth, responsibility, confidence, and independence.
LCA is structured into four sessions (each lasting half a year), with students earning credits for their achievements throughout. The programme includes three main areas of learning:
-
Vocational Preparation
-
General Education
-
Vocational Education
Assessment and Certification
Students are assessed on an ongoing basis and earn credits for completed coursework, tasks, and final exams. The maximum number of credits available is 200. Certification is awarded based on the number of credits achieved:
-
Distinction: 85%–100% (170–200 credits)
-
Merit: 70%–84% (140–169 credits)
-
Pass: 60%–69% (120–139 credits)
Students who earn fewer than 120 credits or do not complete the full programme receive a Record of Experience instead of a final certificate.
The LCA Programme at St. Mark’s Community School offers a valuable pathway for students to succeed in education while gaining important skills for life beyond school.
